A synthetic bristle brush built to behave like hog bristle: stiff enough to move thick oil paint, springy enough to snap back, and it keeps its shape after a season of scrubbing panels outdoors. Polytip fibers are flagged and tapered, so they hold more paint than plain synthetics.

Good for

  • Plein air oil and acrylic painting
  • Blocking in big shapes with a filbert, then cutting edges with a flat or bright
  • A small round for branches, rigging and signatures

Details

  • Polytip synthetic bristle, long handle
  • Filbert #4 and #8: the workhorse plein air shape, soft edges and blending
  • Flat #6 and #10: crisp edges and broad strokes
  • Bright #8: short flat for thick, controlled marks
  • Round #4: lines and small details
  • Cleans up with brush soap or a solvent-free medium; no animal hair
  • Made by Princeton Artist Brush Co.

Starting set suggestion: Filbert #8, Flat #6 and Round #4 cover most small plein air panels (5×7 to 9×12).

Questions painters ask

Is Catalyst Polytip a good replacement for hog bristle? Yes. It's made to handle like hog bristle, with the stiffness to push heavy oil paint, and it holds its shape longer than natural bristle.

Can I use these brushes for acrylic? Yes. Synthetic bristle works with both oil and acrylic. Wash acrylic out before it dries.

Which sizes should I start with for plein air? A filbert #8, a flat #6 and a round #4 handle most panels from 5×7 to 9×12.
